PROJECT OVERVIEW
Melbourne Maze- Walking Tour app will offer users the opportunity to explore small laneways within Melbourne CBD which is well-known for rich street art culture, unique galleries, beautiful small boutique, tiny cafes and hidden restaurants. This adventure will provide location- based experiences. This Melbourne Laneway Tour is an interesting way for people to feel and explore the real Melbourne- both the old and the new.
In this application, there are some feature that we can make use of from our mobile phone involving geo- location and augmented reality (AR). As a walking tour, it also requires an audience with a reasonable level of fitness, and with all locations being accessible by everyone.
NARRATIVE
The tour app will be a narrative driven concept in objective of getting out of the maze . The participant will play the role of the main character who was lost in the maze. In order to get out of this maze, the character needs to follow the instructions provided by the application.
The user needs to begin the tour by confirming navigation to location 1 and then a geolocation tool is activated and the app starts to guide the users. When walking to location 1, the app will provide some information about this place . The user needs to finish some fun challenges given by this app (answering questions, taking pictures, etc) to activate the next location. By finishing ten locations, the user will be able to be out of the maze and receive the reward.

The player acts as the character having a mission to collect supplies to help the town survive. The app is hands-free while the participants can hear their mission and music through their headphones. The app can record the distance, time, pace and calories burned on each mission using the GPS of the user’s phone. The game has over 200 missions and a base building metagame which helps users stay committed.

Ingress is an augmented reality (AR) mobile game which was developed and published in 2013 by Niianntic. Until now, this game is still considered as one the biggest location-based mobile games. In this application, players are divided into two competing factions of “agents’’: struggling for control over “portal” which are in proximity to the player’s real-work location. The narrative frame for this game is a science-fiction scenario. In 2018, this game was revamped into a new version named Ingress Prime which contains a number of quality-of-life upgrades including inventory management, one-finger map gestures.

TARGET AUDIENCE
With this type of theme and design features, the target audience will primarily focus on both male and female aged 15-30. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2019), it is estimated that there are more than 3 million young people aged 15-24 who are living in Australia. Young people aged 15-24 comprised approximately 15% of the total population in 2019. More than a half of these people were male ( 51%) and 49% female. A focus group determined that this age group would be interested in finding exciting experiences of some hidden laneways and arcades.
Characteristics of the target audience involves:
• Interest in exploring hidden places
• Interest in street art culture, unique artworks • Enjoy creative and interesting exploration
After conducting a focus group of 6 participants within my target audience I was able to gather some information regarding what they expect to have in an app.
The majority of participants said the pandemic and response had negatively affected their social connectedness.
All participants are keen to explore some unique places in Melbourne which are hardly found by themselves.

SCENARIO
Jennie is an international student coming from China to study in Australia who has been living in Melbourne for nearly 2 years. . Due to a lockdown last year, she does not have opportunities to explore Melbourne and make new friends. She feels quite frustrated when being stuck at home for a long time by herself. When chatting with her new friend, she is recommended to download an app called Lost in the maze. Her friend recommends her friend to try this game because she thinks this app suits her needs and wants to know more about this place.
Jennie decides to download and play the game. When she first opens the app, the game introduces briefly about this app and provides her some recommendations for having a good experience ( including bringing her earphones and wearing suitable shoes). She is excited to play this game and starts to pack some stuff for her adventure. After travelling to the CBD, she opens the app and follows the instructions to go to the first location. She begins her walk and feels a vibration from her phone and notices she is near to the location. Then a pop-up box on the app prompts and shows her a brief introduction about the place and gives her first challenge. After finishing that challenge, she is also given to the next location. After walking around Melbourne laneways by foot, Jennie discovers lots of places that she has not known before such as hidden coffee shops, small restaurants , unique boutiques, etc. This app also gives her some useful information about places she has been. She also gets to know more people through this app who are playing the game with her at that moment.
After finishing the adventure, she feels so good and relaxed. Thanks to this app, she can find out some hidden coffee shop that tastes so good. She also want to bring her friends to some restaurant in small laneways and try some cuisine from all over the world.

Sammuel is a photographer and graphic designer who just moved to Melbourne from Perth approximately 6 months ago. He is keen to find some unique and interesting places in Melbourne to take photos and creates a good portfolio for his career. One day Sammuel discovers the app called Lost in the Maze from a post of his friend on Instagram. Then he decides to download the app and start to play the game. The reason he wants to try this app is he wants to have some fun in his free time and explore some hidden gems in Melbourne CBD which are not advertised on travel websites.
After downloading and setting the introduction, the app suggests users to get ready on some stuff to have the best experience. Then he prepares some stuff he needs for a day and heads out to the first location. Sammuel then arrives at the first location by using a tram and starts his new journey. He discovers different shops and is amazed by impressive graffitis in some laneways within Melbourne. By looking for some AR coins to collect to be out of the AR maze, he needs to look into some details in the laneways and discover some unique galleries that he passed by many times before. He also takes a number of photos of the laneways as well as the life of people in MMelbourne.
After finishing the journey, Sammuel is satisfied with what he got in a day. Thanks to this app, he also explores many new things about this place and is inspired a lot for his new project. He also finds out a small camera shop which sells some film cameras which he has been looking for with a reasonable price.
